Visiting Greece is on the bucket list of many. Especially, if you’re a food enthusiast this might be your dream destination. But, before you start hopping from one Greek island to another, make your first visit exclusively in Athens. The local dishes available, the variety in flavors, aromas, and textures, will leave wanting more! If just by thinking about it, you are feeling kind of overwhelmed maybe we can help. First on the list of the must-try Greek foods, of course, is the traditional Greek souvlaki (vegetarians and vegans hold tight, there are plenty of options for you as well)

For whatever you’re in the mood for, you’ll find something to satisfy you. Souvlaki comes in a variety of meats, chicken – pork – lamb, either plain or served with bread, fries, salad, and an assortment of sauces. You can also try it wrapped in a pita which is the most common way to eat it.

Moussaka might be the only Greek word you know and that’s ok.

This traditional dish it’s a true delicacy. Layers of potatoes, eggplant, minced meat sauce, and bechamel sauce to top it all of What else could you possibly want to feel that heartwarming feeling? This is the true comfort food for Greeks as well, as most moms prepare this dish on Sundays.

Choriatiki or Greek salad as it’s widely known is the true essence of summertime and a definite must-try Greek food!

The quality of the ingredients used makes the whole difference. Tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers, onion, olives, sometimes capers, topped with a thick slice of feta cheese and dressed just in extra virgin olive oil. Um, our mouth is watering right now. If you want to eat it every single day, it’s fine. We understand we’ve been there.

To be honest you won’t find a single Greek dish that’s not prepared with olive oil and/ or served with olives. Greeks love them and for a good reason. Continuing with the sweet sweet stuff, next on the must-try Greek foods list is Bougatsa!

Originating in Thessaloniki, the Queen of Bougatsa of all kinds, this is pastry like no other. You’ll mostly find it available in its sweet form, filled with cream patisserie and sprinkled with powdered sugar. But it comes in many other savory alternatives as well. Such as feta cheese, spinach or minced meat. Just choose and you won’t regret it.

Finally, we have to mention the famous Baklava. The epitome of desserts.

The traditional way to prepare it by hand takes such a long time since it has so many layers of Philo dough and either walnuts or pistachio nuts. But it’s worth it. A thousand times worth it. Sweet and rich in flavor and aromas but somehow light at the same time. Maybe its the technique maybe its the love behind it.
